What we were supposed to be?
We were treated differently;
yet, we were told to strive to be the same.
We were different in the way we walked, looked, talked, thought, and more,
still, we all were supposed to lead the same lives.
We were and still are defined by
the same measure, the same metrics.
We were put in boxes long before we realized,
that we weren't meant to be put in boxes,
we didn't belong to "this" or "that"
black or white,
we were rainbows,
each one with their own hue,
each one made to walk their own path,
their own walk.
And, after scampering for the better part of our lives,
we finally awaken to understand,
we were not meant to be the same,
our life stories were supposed to be unique,
just like our fingerprints,
And,
all we were ever supposed to be,
was unabashedly ourselves.
